Install Peux OS on PC from Windows

Peux OS (named after Penguin TUX) is an arch-based distro. Peux OS comes with four different desktop flavors: XFCE, LXQt, Gnome, and KDE. If you don’t have a particular choice then go with flagship version – XFCE.

Let us see how to install Peux OS on PC i.e. your Laptop or Desktop Computer using a bootable flash drive with setup files on it. This article describes the process to install latest version Peux OS as a Single Boot Host Operating System on a Computer by creating a bootable peux OS USB Flash Drive on an existing Windows System while replacing the existing operating system. You can use a Flash Drive of 4 GB or more to make it Peux OS bootable Flash Drive.

To create an Peux OS bootable Flash Drive (sometimes known as Pen Drive or USB Drive) on a Windows system and install it as a single host operating system follow the Five easy steps below:

Step 1: Download Peux OS ISO File

Login to your Windows System, open a web browser and navigate to official website of Peux OS Operating System. Scroll down the page to look for download links.

You can choose any one of the given links to download Peux OS ISO file. FossTorrents (1) provides the torrent link, whereas, SourceForge (2) and OSDN (3) provides direct download link. Let’s use OSDN link in this tutorial and download Peux OS XFCE stable version ISO file.

Next, click on the ISO file link to begin file download.

Save the ISO file. It will be saved to default location in user’s Download folder. Wait for the download to complete.

Step 2: Download Rufus Flashing tool

In the meantime, while the Peux OS ISO file is downloading, navigate to official web site of Rufus to download Rufus flashing Software tool for creating a bootable Flash Drive. Scroll down the page and click on the link to download latest version of Rufus tool under download section. Wait for the downloads to finish and close the web browser.

Step 3: Flash Peux OS ISO to USB Flash Drive

Go to the download location and open Rufus tool by executing downloaded Rufus file. The “Device” drop-down box will be empty. Insert a Pen Drive in the USB slot of your computer. Rufus will detect the Pen drive and display in “Device” drop-down box. Now browse and select the Peux OS ISO file from download location by clicking on “Select” button. Type in Label for the flash drive of your choice such as “Peux OS USB” or continue with default label. Keep other options with default values and click on “Start”.

Click “Yes” to allow Rufus to download additional system files for compatibility with the given ISO file, if prompted. Click “OK” and continue with recommended option to “Write in DD Image mode”. Ensure that there is no important data on the Flash Drive (as it will be erased) and click “Ok” to continue flashing the drive.

Wait for the flashing to finish. Click “Close” when Rufus window display “Ready” as status to close the Rufus Tool on successful flashing of Flash Drive.

Step 4: Set and Boot from Peux OS bootable Flash Drive

On system boot, press a designated key (F10, F12, F2, Del, Esc, F9) to enter BIOS or UEFI Setup. It could be different on different make and model. Try other keys as per Make and Model of your computer. Search for the booting device settings and select USB Drive as the Booting Device. Save and Exit BIOS / UEFI setup. The system will restart. While booting, press the designated key (F9, F10, F12, F2, Del, Esc) to display Boot Menu. It will display the list of booting devices. Select USB Drive as Boot Device and Hit Enter.

Step 5: Install Peux OS on PC

If the system will successfully boot from the flash drive, it will display Peux OS splash screen on your computer screen.

Choose the first option to boot into live session of Peux OS. Even though autologin is enabled for liveuser, but just in case that fails, use the below credentials to login to live session:
user: liveuser
pass: root

In Peux OS live session, click on “Install System” icon on desktop to start Peux OS installation setup.

Click on “Launch anyway” button to begin Peux OS installer. Choose language on welcome screen of installer and click next. Choose Office suite version and click next, you may even skip office suite for now and install it later. Next, choose region and zone, click next and choose keyboard layout as per your choice or proceed with default. On partitions tab, select “Erase Disk” and click on “Next”.

Then on users tab, type in your name, username and password and continue. On summary page, click on “Install” button to begin Peux OS installation.

Wait for the installation to finish. Upon completion of setup, click the “Restart now” checkbox and click on “Done” to restart the PC.

Remove Peux OS USB. You Flash drive may appear to be un-usable due to use of “dd” mode. Check out the article for detailed steps on make flash drive reusable.
