This article describes how to create a Ubuntu bootable DVD. If you want to install Ubuntu, you will need to create a bootable media such as DVD to boot from it and install Ubuntu on your system. Once you are ready with Ubuntu ISO file follow the below steps to create a Windows bootable DVD.

A blank DVD can be used to make it Ubuntu bootable DVD. It can be used to install Ubuntu and kept safely for later use. You cannot use this DVD for any other purpose. If you have a re-writable DVD you may re-use it for other purposes too after Ubuntu installation. The re-writable DVD will be erased before re-use each time. Each erase will delete all existing data on the DVD.

Now let us check out the process of creating Ubuntu bootable DVD on Windows and Linux systems.

A. Ubuntu bootable DVD on Windows

On a Windows PC, go to Download Location where Ubuntu ISO file is downloaded. Right click on the ISO file and select the “Burn disc image” option from the context menu.

This will open the default and in-built “Windows Disk Image Burner” application. The default DVD Writer will be selected as disc burner. Click on “verify disc after burning” check box. This will instruct Windows Disc Image Burner to check for any errors after Disc burning. Then click on “Burn” button to start ISO image writing on DVD.

If you are using a re-writable Disk. It will be erased first before burning. Ensure that there is no important data in the Disk before burning as it will be lost. Windows Disk Image Burner will display a warning that the DVD will be completely erased and any data on the disc will also be erased. If you are ensured of no useful data on disc click on “Yes” to start burning.

The image burning process will start. Wait till the Image is Burned to Disk. Upon burning the disk will be finalized to prevent any further addition of data to the disk. Wait till the DVD Disk is finalized for use. Upon finalization, the disk will be verified with the ISO image file to ensure that it is exactly the same copy of ISO without any error. Wait till the Disc is being Verified.

Upon successful, burning, finalization and verification, the message “The disc image has been successfully burned to disc” will be displayed. In case, some error message is displayed, repeat the process, else close the Windows Disk Image Burner tool by pressing ‘Close’ button.

The DVD will eject automatically from the DVD writer.

B. Ubuntu bootable DVD on Linux

On an existing Ubuntu Linux PC you need to install ‘Brasero’ application to burn Ubuntu ISO file to a blank DVD. Use the following command on terminal to install Brasero application:

sudo apt install brasero

Close the terminal, once the installation is complete. Now, insert a blank DVD, open Brasero application and click on “Burn image” tab in Brasero application.

Now, click on the browse button as shown in below image to select Ubuntu ISO file.

Browse to the download location (1), select Ubuntu Desktop ISO file (2) and click on open (3) as shown in below image.

Now, ensure that the ISO file is displayed as source (1), blank DVD is selected as destination (2). The blank DVD will show the balance space after deducting the size of ISO file. Now click on ‘burn’ (3).

The DVD burning process will start. Brasero will generate checksum of ISO file to verify DVD after burning is complete. Once you receive the success message, close the Brasero Application. Alternatively, you may also xfburn or k3b application as a DVD burning software on Ubuntu.

Now since you have a Ubuntu bootable DVD, you can go ahead with installing Ubuntu operating system on your PC.
