Migrate CentOS to Stream

Migrate CentOS Linux to CentOS Stream

Red Hat owned by IBM has announced that CentOS Linux is coming to an end by Dec 2021 and CentOS Stream will be the main distribution available for free now. CentOS Stream is a continuously delivered distro that tracks just ahead of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) development, positioned as a midstream between Fedora Linux and RHEL. Still, most of the users are furious about this move despite deep assurances from the organisation. However, we need to accept the fact and move ahead. Those who still need to continue using CentOS will need to migrate to CentOS Stream from CentOS Linux.

You can use the three simple commands below to migrate from CentOS Linux to CentOS Stream:

sudo dnf install centos-release-stream

sudo dnf swap centos-{linux,stream}-repos

sudo dnf distro-sync

Once you are done with migration process you may check out the version using the following command:

cat /etc/centos-release

The above command will display the following output:

CentOS Stream release 8

The process is demonstrated in the following video:
